Visa and immigration: what you must do before you travel to the UK

Applying for your UK Student visa is an important step in preparing for your studies in the UK. Once you receive your Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS), you should begin your visa application as soon as possible. The application is completed online through the official UK Government website.

While the process can feel detailed, most students complete it successfully by preparing their documents carefully and allowing enough time before travel.

As part of your visa application, you will need to:

  • Pay the Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS), which allows you to access the National Health Service (NHS) during your time in the UK.
  • Prepare your supporting documents, including your passport, CAS statement, and financial evidence such as bank statements that meet UKVI requirements. You may also need to provide TB test results (if applicable), proof of English language proficiency, and certified translations of any documents not in English.
  • Book and attend a biometric appointment at a visa application centre (VAC). This is where your fingerprints and photograph will be taken. You must bring your passport and all required documents with you.

Once your visa has been approved, you will receive a digital visa (eVisa). Download your eVisa and keep both a digital and printed copy for your records. You should make sure you can access your eVisa on your device while travelling, as you may be asked to show it during your journey or on arrival in the UK.

Helpful tips

  • Start preparing your documents early to avoid last-minute delays.
  • Double-check that your financial evidence meets UKVI requirements before submitting your application.
  • Keep copies of all documents you upload or submit, both digitally and in print.
